Integration tab (WinZip settings)

Select the Integration tab from WinZip Settings to control aspects of WinZip's integration with your computer.

Note: in order to change certain settings on the Integration tab, you will need administrative privileges. Windows will open the User Account Control window so you can grant WinZip the ability to make the requested changes.

Modifying the following system options will affect all users who log on to this computer:

Include WinZip in

  • If the Start menu checkbox is selected, WinZip is automatically added to the Taskbar Start menu. Uncheck this option to remove WinZip from the Start menu.
  • If the Desktop checkbox is selected, a shortcut to WinZip is added to the desktop. Uncheck this option to remove the WinZip shortcut from the desktop.

Associate WinZip with

  • The Archives checkbox determines whether Windows will use WinZip to open archives from My Computer, Windows Explorer, most email programs, etc. WinZip can associate itself with the following archive types: ZIP, ZIPX, 7Z, B64, BHX, BZ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, HQX, LHA, LZH, MIM, RAR, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TBZ2, TGZ, TXZ, TZ, UU, UUE, VMDK, XXE, XZ, and Z. If you check this option, WinZip associates itself with all of the listed types. If you uncheck this option, WinZip removes all of its associations. When the option is checked, you can click the Associations button to control WinZip's associations with specific archive types. See Windows Associations for more information on associations.
  • You can specify an alternate extension for Zip files by checking the check box for the Alternate extension for Zip files option and typing the extension in the space provided.

Check for self-extracting files

When the WinZip Explorer context menu is displayed for an EXE file, WinZip can check to see if it is a self-extracting Zip or CAB file. This operation can take a few seconds; you can use the following options to control whether or not it is performed on various types of media.

  • If the On Local hard drives checkbox is checked, WinZip will check EXE files located on local hard drives. This operation is normally quite fast.
  • If the On removable disks (e.g., diskettes) checkbox is checked, WinZip will check EXE files located on removable media. This operation may take a few seconds.
  • If the On other drives (e.g., network drives) checkbox is checked, WinZip will check EXE files on other storage devices such as network drives. The speed of this operation depends on the speed of the device, network connection, etc.

Display comment tooltips for Zip files

When the mouse pointer is hovered over a Zip file (.zip or .zipx) in a Windows Explorer or My Computer window, WinZip can display a tooltip containing basic information about the Zip file, including the number of files in the Zip file and the Zip file comment. This operation may take a few seconds; you can check or uncheck the On Local hard drives, On removable disks, and On other drives checkboxes to control whether or not the tooltips are displayed on these various locations.

WinZip Express

These options allow you to enable or disable WinZip Express addon products that may be installed. If none are installed, this section will not be shown. The WinZip Express for Office addon is installed by default (your administrator may have disabled this feature if it is not present).
