The Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista operating systems have security rules and User Account Control (UAC) settings that restrict writing data to certain protected files and folders.
Error code 5 indicates that you don't have enough rights to save or edit files in the folder where the WinZip registration file is stored. If you see this error happen, please click the link for your Windows version below and follow the detailed steps to fix Error code 5.

Windows 8
Deleting the existing WinZip registration file
- Open to or change to the Start menu screen

- Even though there is no text field, type the following:
C:\ProgramData

- Search will open; click on "programdata" directly below the search field (this will open the folder)
Note: if you do not see a programdata item, just press Enter on the keyboard
- Click the WinZip folder to select it and then delete it

- Open WinZip and enter your registration information
If deleting the WinZip folder does not work for you, try these alternate instructions and see whether that helps:
Temporarily turn off the User Account Control (UAC)
- From the desktop open the Charm Bar by placing your cursor at the top right corner of the screen. If you are using a tablet, swipe your finger to the left from the right edge of the screen. When the Charm Bar displays, click (or tap) on Settings. This will bring up the Settings panel.

- Click (or tap) on Control Panel and then select User Accounts and Family Safety

- Select User Accounts and in the next window select Change User Account Control Settings


- Drag the slider bar down to the bottom and click OK to accept the changes

- Restart your computer
Once your computer has finished restarting, try registering again. After WinZip is registered, be sure to turn the User Account Control on again by performing the steps above, but drag the slider to its original position to resume protection of your computer.
Windows 7
Deleting the existing WinZip registration file
- Click on the Taskbar Start button. In the text box just above the Start button type: C:\ProgramData and press the Enter key on the keyboard.

- Delete the WinZip folder

- Open WinZip and enter your registration information
If deleting the WinZip folder does not work for you, try these alternate instructions and see whether that helps:
Temporarily turn off the User Account Control (UAC)
- Click on the Taskbar Start button. In the text box just above the Start button type: User Accounts and press the Enter key on the keyboard.
- Click on Change User Account Control settings
- Drag the slider bar down to the bottom and click OK to accept the changes

- Restart your computer
Once your computer has finished restarting, try registering again. After WinZip is registered, be sure to turn the User Account Control on again by performing the steps above, but drag the slider to its original position to resume protection of your computer.
Windows Vista

- Open the Control Panel and then User Accounts
- Click on Turn User Account Control on or off (a User Account Control authorization window may appear; click Continue if prompted)

- Uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer

- Click OK and then click Restart Now to restart your computer
Once your computer has finished restarting, try registering again. After WinZip is registered, be sure to turn the User Account Control on again by performing the steps above, but then re-check Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
