The WinZip MSI file

The MSI file for the current version of WinZip can be downloaded from the Alternative Download Links page.

This article includes information regarding a USER_WZMUL_LOCATION property that you can create and configure to cause your license file to be automatically copied from a shared location to each user's computer.

The WinZip Multi-User Registration File: WinZip.wzmul

Customers who purchase a multi-user license will receive a unique WinZip.wzmul registration file which must be copied to a WinZip subfolder in the Windows Common AppData folder. This folder contains application data for all users. A typical path for the WinZip.wzmul file is C:\ProgramData\WinZip. For Windows XP a typical path is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WinZip. The presence of WinZip.wzmul in this folder will convert WinZip to a licensed, registered version.

If you downloaded a distribution file, your WinZip.wzmul registration file will also need to be downloaded and will need to be copied to the WinZip folder described above. This can be done manually, by double clicking on the WinZip.wzmul file, or by creating and configuring a USER_WZMUL_LOCATION property.

What are the user requirements to install WinZip?

The initial WinZip installation must be done from an account with Administrator or Power User privileges. These privileges are required to register WinZip’s shell extension and set up WinZip’s file associations. This initial installation configures WinZip both at the machine level (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip) and at the user level for the installing user only (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip). Thereafter, no special privileges are required as the machine level configuration will be silently propagated to subsequent users (administrators or limited users) who run WinZip for the first time.

The default installation settings include the creation of WinZip shortcuts and a program group in the 'All Users' folder so that the icons appear on the Desktop and in the Start menu for all users of the machine.

For example, if you are using Windows XP, shortcuts will be created in these two folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

and the WinZip program group will be created in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\StartMenu\Programs

For Windows versions more recent than XP, the Common Desktop is typically found in the C:\Users\Public folder, and the Common Start Menu (which contains the Common Programs folder) is typically found in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows folder.

In addition, on Windows Vista and XP, a shortcut to the WinZip Quick Pick tray icon is added to the Startup folder for all users (Jump Lists can be used with other Windows version instead). For example, on Windows XP, this shortcut will be added to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\StartMenu\Programs\Startup

A typical path for the WinZip Quick Pick Shortcut on Windows Vista is:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

To customize your WinZip installation, properties within the MSI file can be edited with alternate values. For example, you could disable the "Tip of the Day" and prevent the WinZip Desktop shortcut by changing the value of the INSTALLCMD property from "/autoinstall" to "/notip /autoinstall" and by changing the value of the ADDDESKTOPICON property to "0".
