Multiple Drive Warning (WinZip Jobs)
WinZip® displays this warning when the items shown in the Select Items panel of the Job Wizard are, or potentially could be, from more than one disk drive or UNC resource.
This message is also displayed if you use more than one generic folder name (for example, <MyDocuments> and <AppData>) because WinZip will not know whether these folders are on the same drive until the job runs.
We strongly recommend using a separate Zip file for each drive or UNC resource.
The Zip file specification does not allow drive letters or UNC paths to be stored with the folder information for the files in the Zip file. This causes two potential problems when zipping files from multiple drives:
- It is possible for duplicate filenames to occur if the job tries to add two files with the same name and folder from two different locations. This will cause your job to terminate with an error.
For example, if you include both C:\Sales and D:\Sales, and both Sales folders contain a file named January.xls, WinZip will be unable to finish the job because there will be two files named Sales\January.xls. The Zip file format specification does not support two files with the same name and folder information.
- Because the drive letters/UNC names are not included, it will be difficult to extract files from the Zip file to their original locations or to re-create the original folder structures in a different location. This is because the folder structures from all of the drives or UNC resources will be mixed together. You will need to extract from the Zip file on a folder-by-folder basis.
